I love how they look like miniature works of art. They’re so delicate and intricate, with ridges in the sole that are shaped just right to help you grip on slippery surfaces, tiny bones inside your toes that bend—just enough—to give you traction while walking or running (or standing all day). The arch is such a small thing yet it holds up an enormous amount of weight for years at a time without complaining. And when someone gets professional pedicures done…wow! I want my feet to be beautiful every day too.

And so do the people they belong to: when someone spends time with their feet and learns how much work goes into taking care of our toesies, heels, arches, soles–and everything in between!–they almost always love them more than they did before! There are also a lot of pressures on us as women that come from society (or maybe just uninformed family members) about how we should take care of or not take care of our bodies – but it’s up to each one of us what feels good for ourselves. Some folks wipe down their feet after going outside barefoot and some don’t; some wear closed-toe shoes every single day and some don’t; and so on. It’s up to you how your feet are treated, but if I had one piece of advice for everyone: spend time with them!

Number One: You can walk barefoot anywhere without worrying about what may be lurking in a carpet or floor mat – it sounds like such an insignificant thing, but feeling confident that my toes won’t get dirty when they touch something is really liberating. For me personally, shoes have become more of a fashion choice than anything else! Some people might find these tips too aggressive, but wearing closed toe shoes every single day has made such a difference in how often I get dry skin between my toes and how quickly (or not) I get a running blister.
Number Two: They are really effective at picking up things! Whether it’s the dust under your couch or something outside, if you don’t want to pick it up with your hand, just use one of them.
Number Three: Shoes can be so expensive!!! My parents had only two pairs when they were growing up – dress shoes for church and play shoes that they would wear while playing out in the backyard all summer long. When my Dad went off to college he bought his first pair of sneakers which cost him $40!
