As a life-long fan of the Life is Strange series, I was excited to find out that there would be an alternate ending in the second game. When I finally got around to playing it, I was disappointed with what they gave me. It seemed like they had taken all their creativity and poured it into one episode while leaving this one lacking. But then I realized that maybe my expectations were too high? So let’s talk about some things that could have been done differently!
Include more of the characters and their individual choices. This would really give me a sense that my decisions throughout the game had consequences for them too, as opposed to just myself. Plus it would make me feel like they were all important in some way!
Give more closure on whether or not Chloe and Rachel actually are going to be friends again? It felt so abrupt when I finished playing because there was no mention of what happened with them after everything else you do in this episode. If we know how those two end up then maybe it wouldn’t seem so jarring but right now, getting through this part feels incomplete.
either change the ending completely or add another alternate one where Max helps out Kate instead of putting her in the position she’s in when Max leaves.
It would be really cool to have an alternate ending where you could save Kate from being killed by Nathan, and then it plays out like the original one with Chloe getting shot but without all of the other things that happen after because we know how everything turns out for everyone else.
I really hope that they do something like this because it’s way too jarring to go from finishing the episode and then being dropped into a completely different scene with Chloe getting shot. It would be even better if you could save Kate instead of putting her in the position she ends up in when Max leaves, but I’m not sure how possible that is or what other events need to happen for whatever reason.
I really like what they did with Kate in this episode. It was interesting to see her meeting up with Nathan and being all drugged out because she’s obviously addicted, which is such a stark contrast from the girl who Max sees when she first arrives at Blackwell. And then it just breaks my heart to watch that traumatic scene play out where we know things are going downhill for her even before Chloe steps in and literally saves the day by stepping between them as he shoots. She would have been killed otherwise, since Nathan doesn’t hesitate for an instant to start shooting again after seeing his opportunity thwarted. So yeah…I REALLY hope something like this happens!
I can’t remember if this is the first time we’ve seen Kate use drugs. I think it might be, but not 100% sure. It’s just…weird to see her doing that openly in front of people who could care less about how she’s feeling or what she needs and then leaving with a guy without even knowing his name when clearly he has some connection to Nathan given where he was hanging out at before they met up.
I’m not sure what to make of Kate, honestly. She’s desperate and vulnerable in a way that Chloe can’t help but empathize with, but she also has this dangerous edge about her that makes me wonder how much control she actually has over the situation at hand- which is probably why we don’t see more scenes from her perspective than just these two moments I mentioned above.
So yeah, if you couldn’t tell by now: I love life is strange!
We still know next to nothing about Jesse (though they might’ve shown us his face briefly before he made it disappear): so who knows? Maybe something like that could happen too?! Maybe when all this madness is over.
What I do know is that life is strange has been one of the most beautiful, heartwarming, and thought-provoking experiences I’ve had in gaming. It’s not perfect, but it still feels like a work of art to me because this game was so much more than just another story: it was an experience.
I’ll be playing through again for sure with Chloe as protagonist (though Kate might make good sense too), or maybe even Max if i’m feeling brave enough! Let me know what you guys think about finale though: did my alternate ending change your perspective at all? Did you prefer Rachel Amber instead of Kate Marsh? Who knows what the future will bring…but whatever happens, we’re going to need each other more than ever.
