Who is the only U.S. president whose grandmother outlived him? This is a question that many people have asked themselves, but there’s one person who knows the answer: President George H.W. Bush himself!
In this blog post, we will take a look at all of the presidents in American history and find out who was their longest-living relative to date – and who was not so lucky!
The first president to answer this question was George Washington, who lived from 1732-1799. His mother died on May 23rd of the year 1800 and his grandmother Joyce Fielding passing away only two months later in July of that same year. This means that both women were alive at the time!
Theodore Roosevelt’s father passed away before he became President but his son Kermit died while he was still sitting in office which makes him the longest living relative among all presidents so far – although not if you count uncles as well as nephews (which we will do). Franklin D. Roosevelt also had a longer-lived sibling: sister Anna Eleanor who survived until 1979 when she passed away aged 76 years old. You can also make a case for his son James who died in 1991 at the age of 63.
An interesting question to ask is “Who was the first president whose grandmother outlived them?” George H. W. Bush served from 1989-1993 and he’s not only one – but also as far as we can tell, the only U.S President so far whose own mother had passed away before they came into office!

President George H. W. Bush: The Only U.S. President Whose Grandmother Outlived Him who is the only u.s. president whose grandmother outlived him?
It’s rare for a person to have a living grandparent, let alone one that outlives them! This phenomenon happened with former US President George Herbert Walker Bush (1924 – 2018), who was also known as “Bush 41” and served from 1989 to 1993 after serving in other positions since 1959; he had his mother’s love until she died at age 92 just over two weeks before her son turned 80 on June 12th of 2002—a year later than when he would have lost his grandmother if not for their shared longevity.
