the call is coming from inside the house: An exploration of psychological horror games

I was quite the scaredy cat when I was younger, so it’s really no surprise that my favorite horror films were the ones with jump scares. The same goes for video games – the more jumps you get, the better! But as I got older and became less of a scaredy-cat (or maybe just too brave), I began to explore other types of horror media. In this blog post, we’re going to be talking about psychological horror games which are much scarier than jump scares.

The best way to define horror is “any work that can frighten or scare the audience.” But what does it mean for something to be frightening? Horror has a longstanding tradition of relying on suspense, violence and gore in order to elicit fear. However, some argue that these elements are not necessary if they’re used too often or without any substance – the jump scares can get old fast! The psychological horror genre takes an alternative approach by using common horror tropes like monsters and ghosts but telling them from a different angle. In fact, many times the monster isn’t even real!

So, what makes a game scary? It’s no secret that video games have an advantage over film since interactivity gives players more control of their experience. In many ways this also increases the stakes – if you’re not able to fight back in real time it can feel like your fate is sealed. But there are other factors at play: atmosphere and sound design create tension by building dread while the story establishes feelings of hopelessness or vulnerability. And then there are those jump scares! Just when we think things will get better something jumps out at us scaring our pants off.

In order to explore psychological horror games we’ve compiled some examples below which range from indie titles up through the most well-known blockbuster games. We’ve also tried to include a range of styles from the more traditional survival horror titles (Resident Evil) to action adventure games with some psychological elements (Dead Space).

The following list has been complied in alphabetical order and is not ranked:

A Machine For Pigs, Amnesia: The Dark Descent, BioShock Infinite, Dead Space, Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem – GameCube Edition, System Shock II, Silent Hill series.

Many of the games on this list were made with a graphical engine that allows them to create immersive, terrifying game environments in which the player must find their way through and survive various threats while trying not to lose their sanity or unwittingly commit suicide by doing something as simple as walking into a room they know contains monsters lurking inside.

All ten titles listed here are available on Steam but some, like BioShock Infinite, require purchasing it when bundled separately from the game’s retail version before using it through Valve’s online platform. While not technically a horror game, the recent release of the virtual reality-compatible gaming system Oculus Rift offers an exciting new way to experience some old favorites.

What are horror games?

Horror games, or survival horror as they’re sometimes called, typically involve a player being put in an unfamiliar and dangerous environment. The aim of this genre is to scare the player through various gameplay elements that include building suspense via sound design – like disturbing background music; using puzzles – such as finding clues to unlock doors; providing scares with jump-scares, startling sounds and clear indications that something might be lurking around the next corner (sometimes without giving any indication at all); finally ramping up tension by creating panic when ammo/health supplies run out before you can find more.
